Only one Trial left, the Open Cocker, which I am really looking forward to. Brad, our Keeper, is taking us to a lovely part of the Estate which is not only well stocked with game but is super spaniel cover. Far too good for Cockers... LOL as they say, they know I'm only joking!
Now... on a more serious note... there are several Trophies missing. Two from our last Trial at Hambleden, a couple of years ago, when Shelli Jones ran the day. No it isn't her fault they're missing, it's so it might jog your memory?? Will Clulee was the A Judge and it isn't his fault either. One is a really lovely one - donated by the late Charlie Mitchell.
Dave Templar won the Worldsend Trophy for the Best Hunting Dog, although his bitch came 2nd, at Hartham Park a couple of years ago. He still has it!!
THERE IS A £50 FINE FOR TROPHIES ARRIVING AFTER 1ST OCTOBER OF THE SEASON FOLLOWING THE ONE IN WHICH IT WAS WON. This is in all the schedules and is one of the rules that owners sign to agree to be bound by.
Talking of Rules. Mostly it's new Trialling folk that get this wrong but not exclusively. You are supposed to ASK permission to leave a Trial. Not just give your armband to someone to give to me at the end...
It was quite poignant that I was asked by Malcolm Brockless to include a paragraph on our Draws reminding people to be sporting. He, through the G&WCT, gives the Club THREE Trials. There is a warm village hall for us to meet in where refreshments are provided for everyone. At lunchtime we are all supplied with thick delicious soup, rolls and home made sausages which magically appear in the field. Before we move off again he plies everyone with Sloe Gin or Port with handfuls of sweets.. this is the paragraph, it has been slightly abbreviated;
The ‘Keeper has asked me to remind you that this day is given by the
G&WCT in order for us all to enjoy a day of friendly sport and camaraderie.
The Guns have bid in Silent Auctions to have a leisurely walked up day and
often don’t realise there is a competition until they arrive. Let’s make sure
they have a GREAT experience. All he asks of us is good humour and sporting behaviour - please
make sure that you enjoy the day J
I think it's sad that we have to be reminded to be sporting. Manners are becoming something of the past in some places.Too many moans about the thick cover, the nervous Gun that might miss a couple of birds, the nextdoor dog nicking your ground. These days are suposed to be fun. I know I can be a grumpy old bat but I do try and put on my best cheerful hat at Trials. And I do tell you jokes and sing silly songs....
Have a great festive break and a Happy New Year everyone.
Special big hugs to Alan Rountree for his huge compliment - I just love that man x x
